HJR 6: Idaho HJR 6, the English as Official State Language Amendment
We take no position on ballot measures. This is a plain-language summary.
HJR 6 would add a section to the Idaho Constitution making English the official state language. Public meetings, documents and public school instruction would be in English, except where federal law requires another language. English is already Idaho's official language in state law, but not in the constitution.
A YES vote means
English becomes the official state language in the Idaho Constitution, and government proceedings, documents and public instruction must be in English unless federal law requires otherwise.
A NO vote means
No change to the Idaho Constitution. English stays the official state language in state law (Idaho Code 73-121) only.
To pass: A majority of the votes cast on the question. (The Idaho Constitution, Article XX, Section 1, says a "majority of the electors" must ratify an amendment.)

- No organized campaign for or against HJR 6 was found. Ballotpedia reports $0 raised on either side as of Aug 10, 2026. Supporters and opponents are left empty rather than listing individual lawmakers. In 2025 it passed the House 59-8 and the Senate 30-5.
- Passing threshold: the constitution says 'a majority of the electors.' Ballotpedia and past practice treat this as a simple majority of votes cast on the question. No SoS page states it outright.
- Order (2) follows the voter pamphlet. Printed ballot order is not confirmed.
